On the afternoon of July 3rd, A Shift, E30, R30 got toned out to a explosion causing severe burns to a victim who was lighting the fire. Upon arriving on scene, E30 & R30 found a extremely large burn pile fully involved, with a 30 yr old male standing by a house. The male advised that he was lighting the fire with motor oil when it ignited causing an explosion. The patient advised he immediately jumped into the pool and then got out and was rinsing off under a garden hose. He obtained burns to approximately 2nd degree burns to 30% of his body including his face, chest and abdomen.
A "Trauma Alert" was immediately called and a helicopter requested for rapid transport. E-10 was dispatched to secure a landing zone which was setup at the LZ next to Station 10; in the Villages. The patient was alert and oriented and flown out to Shands Hospital in serious condition with a good outlook.
E-30 remained on scene and extinguished the fire.
